After going to the speech therapist and finding out that the binky needed to go, it became a question of when. She gave us the deadline of when Asher turns 18 months, which would take us to the end of February. But really, we wanted to get it over with sooner than that. After my trip to Phoenix, we planned on doing it right away. But then, Asher was in the midst of teething 4 incisors and clearly needed the comfort (as did I, for my sanity), so it was put off. We would discuss it here and there about when we would do it, but we couldn't quite agree on a date or day, or it never seemed to be the right time.
Well, when Alison mentioned that they were going to say good-bye to Lily's binky almost two weeks ago, I mentioned it to Eric, and we decided spur of the moment to just do it. So we did. Fearfully. And to be honest, the first day wasn't too bad. Bedtime was a little rough since it took Asher a bit longer to fall asleep, but it wasn't horrendous. But by the next day, it was like he had suddenly realized what was going on (it reminded me of night weaning all over again), and he was SO MAD! As in, "How dare you take away the boob and now this?! You are CRUEL!" But I stayed strong, and we made it through.
And now Asher is a free man, whether he realizes it or not. It's been almost two weeks since he's had a binky in his mouth! And I am elated to be free from trying to remember to bring a pacifier wherever we go "just in case" and keeping the gross things clean and washing them everyday. Even though I will certainly miss the "pacifying "effect they have, it was time for it to go.
Adios, pacifier. You did a lot for us, and we will be forever grateful.

Congrats on the extraction! Hooray!!! I think the cold turkey approach works quite nicely for lots of things (it worked for weaning for us). It's like a band-aid you know? Stings for just a bit. Hopefully you'll see a difference in his speech but really he'll just talk when he's ready. :)
Congratulations for making the leap. It's easy to forget the inconvenience of keeping track of it already in my opinion.
We need to do that too. We were doing so good for quite a while, but we've definitely fallen off the wagon. We have decided to wait until his molars come in, because we know how bad that can be... and he is the slowest teether ever! Good job on making the leap. One of these days you're going to look back and laugh at what an agonizing decision the "when" was, but it really is when you're there living it! =)
